Top seed Gilly Lane battled the incredibly fast Alfredo Avila this evening in a marathon match that lasted an hour and a half. In the end, it was Avila that prevailed to earn a semifinal spot. A match worthy of being a final!
The other court saw wildcard and Rochester favorite Patrick Chifunda take on another Mexican pro, Erik Tepos. Two games down, Chifunda was about to stage a comeback by winning the third. However, Erik’s consistent retrieval combined with a toe injury in the fourth took their toll on the veteran Zambian.
The second set of quarterfinals saw Australian Wade Johnstone overcome Gerardo De Paul Garcia who has had a long week battling through qualifying rounds to reach this stage.
Canadian Dane Sharp, with a set of heavy legs from the previous night, succumbed to second seed Eddie Charlton.
Tomorrow promises a great couple of semifinals and the crowd has been building everyday at the University of Rochester courts!
