Imagine walking into the Olympics with an athlete who is a guest in your home, and watching them compete. You’ve gotten to know this athlete during a drive from the airport, chatted with them over breakfast about their family, training, past matches, and passion for their sport. You’re impressed by the dedication and diligence of your guest world-class athlete. During their Olympics event, you are super excited to cheer for Your Player.
The Rochester ProAm aims to offer you that same experience, but with world-class squash players – some of whom may be in the 2028 LA Olympics.
The Rochester ProAm aims to inspire local squash by infusing the Rochester squash community with immersive experiences of a professional squash tournament: by personally meeting players, and watching them compete. Our squash community has opportunities to interact with professional players by volunteering to host, drive and getting on the court with them.
The Rochester ProAm is appealing to world-class professional players because Rochester has a long-standing reputation for being exceptionally good player hosts. Our hosting players makes our tournament more attractive and remunerative to players; they have no lodging expenses, and they have gracious and engaging hosts.
Winning in tournaments only begins to cover a player’s airfare across an ocean after several successful rounds, say up to the quarter-finals. Fortunately, players arrive with round-trip tickets. Tournaments attract players because winning provides access to tournaments with more prize money. The Rochester squash community offsets the sting of professional competition through our warmth, generosity, and hospitality. The professional players, and our local squash community is inspired and invigorated by the ProAm.
Cheer for your favorite local player on the first day of the tournament. The ProAm will feature a limited number of top local players, as wildcard entrants, usually a junior and some college players. All other players are top world-ranked players, historically starting around #80. The first day of the tournament is especially exciting because the local players attract passionate fans. Be sure to watch the Match-ups, see below, and come to cheer for your favorite local stars.
Rising stars pass through the Rochester ProAm. There’s a good chance that you’ll see someone at the ProAm who will make it to the world top 20 – and possibly into the 2028 Olympics. Our tournament has seen: Miguel Rodriguez (winner 2006, current #24), Karem Gawad (winner 2010, current #4), Ali Farag (winner 2012, long-time world #1, retired 2025), Leonel Cardenas (winner 2019, current #11), Ashab Irfan (winner 2024, current #44), and other current top world 80 players who did not win our tournament, including: Jonah Bryant (#14), Kareem El Torkey (#21), Declan James (#32), Bernat Jaume (#33), Veer Chotrani (#49), Matthew Lai (#79), among others.
How can you help/participate?
